Lumpectomy followed by chemo.

Hi, I'm new to this and really need advice please?

I had a high grade dcis and had it removed but did not get clear margins. The consultant wanted me to have a mastectomy due to not getting a clear margin but I didn't want this so she agreed to try again for a clear margin and lymph nodes removed. I had this donemail and got the clear margin and clear lymph nodes. The initial plan was lumpectomy and radiotherapy but now because they didn't get a clear margin they want me to have chemotherapy and radiotherapy. I really don't understand why I can't just have radiotherapy as I really don't want the chemotherapy with all the things it brings. I'm just wondering if anyone else has been in this position and refused? It's a really scary situation as they say it's to make sure there's no stray cells and to reduce the risk of it coming back but I can't find anywhere if people have refused and been ok.

  • No honestly I really don't want it despite the risks, but hearing your story was what I needed it really was a wake up call. I'm so sorry to hear your suffering again I pray for the best for you. Thank you for taking the time to speak to me talking to people has really helped me x

  • Aah that's totally understandable. it's such a scarey time!

well don't worry about your eyebrows. I was mostly worried about them and when they went it didn't bother me half as much as I expected. I think I just felt proud of Myself that I was getting through the treatment so what people thought wasn't a worry so much. I went on sites too to learn how to draw them on and they looked ok .. well I thought so anyway ha ha. I think we're lucky that we are in an age where it's fashionable to have them drawn or tattooed on so no-one really notices

I hope your feeling better about it all now

  • Hiya, I had a mamoplasty and advised radio only but my tumor turned out to be larger than they thought.

I had 6 mths of chemo it isn't as bad as you imagine it to be. I had a reinsision to check for clear margins lucky for me they were. Then I had 19 radio sessions.

It's your choice what you do. Good luck in whatever you decide

    Hi Pink,

You'll find this site helpful along your journey, as people have had first hand experience of all you're going through.

I have been told that I don't have secondary cancer following a bone scan, so this is good news. I go for a CT scan on Thursday to see if this is another primary - another knock back, but I'll get there with the amazing help of my care team in the NHS.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
