chemotherapy for lung cancer

Hello,

My aunt was diagnosed with lung cancer (adenocarcinoma) 8 months ago. As soon as she was diagnosed, she had radiotherapy and chemotherapy. After 3 months, the doctors decided to try immunotherapy, but it did not work for her. In the meantime the cancer spread to her spine, into two places. She had radiotherapy to shrink the tumors in her spine too, and now she is having chemotherapy with carboplatin and alimta. She has had three cycles, and will have another three. What happens after these 6 cycles? I know you cannot say for sure, but is it true that chemotherapy is too toxic to continue? Is there any kind of maintenance treatment she can undergo? I've heard that if the cancer is metastatic maintenance may be difficult? I would be very greatful for any information.

Thank you,

Kita

  • Hello all,

Just an update. So my aunt was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma in her lung in September last year. After a few months of doing chemo and trying immunotherapy (didn't work) her cancer spread to her spine. She then had radiotherapy, which worked well, and went on a treatment with pemetrexed and carboplatin, which seemed to have worked in the first 4 cycles, but last tests revealed the tumors in her spine started to grow again. Her doctor interrupted the chemo and said she was investigating another course of action, with different drugs (still chemo, as she does not have the mutations that would allow her to take pills).

Has anyone heard of anything similar? If pemetrexed and caboplatin are not working anymore, does it mean other drugs may work?

    Any thoughts would help...

    Thanks!
