Coronavirus Stopping Urgent Cancer Treatment

I just can’t understand why the government is not centralising patients with coronavirus who live in the North of the country.

People with other serious very urgent potentially life threatening illnesses (cancer specifically) are being denyed urgent treatments because of all hospitals shutting down to all other illnesses except coronavirus patients.

This means people who have a potential cancer diagnosis cannot get confirmation for example with a scan, or biopsy, or endoscopy and therefore cannot be given potential lifesaving treatment.

We are told time is of the essence. Therefore why has the government not dedicated several northern hospitals or built a new hospital like the one down south so that other local hospitals can continue to treat other urgent patients (cancer).

It is such a stressful and worrying situation.

I have been teased for taking precautions with carona virus, ie hand gel, rubber gloves, masks!

I can’t believe people are continuing to ignore the social distancing which we have been told to follow. I am begging people to

please take every precaution possible to keep coronavirus at bay because coronavirus May mean hospital and that means other people needing hospital are unable to get it and are also dying.

  • Hi Princess. I’m so sorry to hear that you’re not getting treatment. I feel the same as Jenny. It’s a total disgrace and emotional abuse. I wouldn’t give a dam about loyallty for the NHS though; I’m sorry if this sounds blunt, but if you’ve worked for the NHS for all those years you will know that it’s not uncommon to be treat like cr*p;. (sorry for the blunt language)...my friend recently died and she worked for the NHS for many years 30+, she was disabled and frankly all they wanted was shut of her. It turns my stomach. It’s full of cliches and backstabbing and my friend didn’t ‘fit’ in. I know not every department or person is like the same and the workers do some excellent work but the structure of the hospital is that to the actual establishment you are in my opinion nothing more than a number and setting aside the doctors, nurses, admin workers etc, it is nothing more than a business...a company.  If you like your work I would suggest you are one of the lucky ones to work with nice colleagues....the boses and the organisiation are a different matter in my opinion....so what I’m saying is don’t harbour misplaced loyalty. Look after yourself. You are who matters. Do and say whatever is best for YOU.xx

  • Hi Jenny

Can I ask you, does a CT scan show cancer. It’s just that I’ve been given one as they can’t give me the colonoscopy due to covid and someone has told me they are no good. That they miss things.  The one I had was where they put a drip in me and put some dye through it into my body.

Has your mum heard anything else yet about her 2nd scan. It’s a disgrace to have to pay yourself. I would keep pestering the GP and shout!!

I wonder if anyone deemed ‘important’ would listen if a petition was put together on one of those sites requesting that cancer treatment be resumed. Do you know the ones I mean, where people sign it and then you send it to Downing Street. It might draw some attention.

I believe the government should give the patient the choice as to whether they want to take the risk of going to hospital to have treatment for cancer or whether to suspend it...but the patient should have the choice not the government. The government is hiding behind the “we’re doing it for your own good’ cr*p that they are spouting out If anyone dare ask a question regarding cancer treatment. It stinks!!

I wrote an email to this site. They are a high profile organisation. I’ve always donated to cancerous research for years and years and think it’s a wonderful thing, and I think this site is both informative especially like the forums and ask the nurse section are invaluable. Just to put you in touch with people in a similar if not the same position as yourself or family member is invaluable and much appreciated. I asked if they were pushing for the ‘starting/resuming of cancer testing and treatment’. They are high profile. They are working for cancer patients. I just feel so passionate and despairing of this whole situation that so many people have found themselves in. They are big, alone our voices are so small.  I haven’t had a reply yet.

    xx

  • Thank you for your reply. It's as you say our immediate colleagues are there for us but the establishment as such doesn't care. I have heard from the hospital today and they want me to go to clinic Friday for treatment and a prescription. As I am suffering with symptoms I may need another ct/mri. Hoping that things start moving for me now! Fingers crossed and I'm so sorry about your poor friend x

  • Hi Kadash

I think everyone should keep shouting, signing the petition and wrtiing to MP's etc. I've wrote to my MP and got a very standard reply.  I then wrote back to him. and he says that he's spoken to my consultant and that my treatments are going ahead. I had explained to him how my treatment was very much reduced due to the virus which I consider puts at risk of not having my cancer cured. I very much doubt that anythings changed but I'm about to write back yet again and become a thorn in his side. Think I'll write to opposition MP too today.

    Shelly x
