Post Op mastectomy and reconstruction

Hi i had my op 17 days ago and only had drain remove 3 days ago. My surgeon saved my nipple but it has been very red now  the nipple its just very red. My surgeon said the top skin of it will probably fall off. I still have the Pico dressing with battery pack and continue to take Flucloxacill 500mg 4 times a day.

Is it natural to feel real fatigue, sick, breast feels tight, uncomfortable and less movement? Is there any chance this is due to infection?

Be grateful if anybody could help

Thanks in advance x

  • Hi Jolamine

Yes positive is the key as much as possible.

No floods near me has stopped raining here for while but, think it gives rain for weekend not gonna worry .

I did walk two days but first one wasnt too bad. The last one i could hardly ever stand and that was with my walking stick also stopping. So it took an awful lot out of me so havn't done it since. Unfortunately are pool is closed until November. Even when it does open i need someone to go with me as need help undressing and dressing.

I hope it stays sunny and you get outside.

    Best Wishes

    Hi Angela,

I'm glad to hear that you are not near the flooding.

I'm so sorry to hear that your pool is closed until November. Is it having some work done on it?  I have found swimming a great exercise for my chest. I walk with a walker, so it isn't that easy to walk any distnce.

I had some interesting experiences in the swimming pool until I found the right prostheses for swimming. Silicone ones tended to bring my boobs down to my waist, whereas polystyrene beads floated them around my neck and foam ones held the water when I came out of the pool. I discovered a great charity called knitted knockers. These were filled with bath scrunchies, which were ideal and, these are what I still use today.

    Have a good weekend.

    Regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

I'm glad you enjoy your swimming  . Never thought about your prostheses being a problem in the water. Where is your Knitting Knockers based?

Not surprised you can't walk to far with a walker my mum use to have one too.

I hope your weather was better than ours today. We had some dry times but, then the rain didnt take time to come down

Yes our lesuire centre is getting all renovated.

I hope you enjoy your days away during the week.

    Good luck

    Hi Angela,

Yes I do enjoy swimming and find that it is one of the exercises I can still do, as it’s not weight bearing. Yes, I do find myself rather limited with my walker, but it gets me around.

Knitted Knockers are based in High Barnet. They have a number of volunteers throughout the country, who knit the ‘knockers’ for them. You can send a donation for them or they will send them free of charge. They come beautifully packed in a muslin bag, with a note from the knitter and a little package of love heart sweeties – restores your faith that there are still caring people in the world. You will also find them online at cancercareparcel.co.uk/.../

Yes, we had a few heavy showers today, but at least that meant that I didn’t have to water the garden! What a pity that your leisure centre is being refurbished, but it should all be nice and fresh once it reopens.

I am really looking forward to getting away later in the week.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

I hope that your doing ok today and all ready to enjoy your break away.

The Knitting knockers are campaigning with other groups to try to  stop our Cancer Unit being closed as it covers a large area  from where people come to it. As well as that it has facilites that other units don't have. They are talking about keeping the units open that service the areas furtherest away. Different facts have been produced that are totally wrong. They are also not considering the elderly and people with other health problems to have to travel longer distances.  It's a disgrace though that it's not welll enough supported. I would have supported it whether i'd taken it or not.  I'm thinking of the generations even after us.

    Anyhow you take care.

    All the best

    Hi Angela,

When you think of the number of people now developing cancer, it does seem like lunacy to be closing your local cancer unit. It makes such a difference to have a local cancer unit. Mine was originally only 5-10 minutes away from home, but I changed after the first year and now have a 3 hour round trip to get there.

It's amazing how facts can be totally misrepresented. I am like you, I would have to have got involved in this if it were local to me. I hate any injustices like this.

I hope that you are recovering well and are in good spirits.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

I hope that you are well today and able to get out to your garden.  I was at my appointment today nipple and area around is drying up.  At this stage they want it to moisten so it will come away. BCN has said would need dressed more often so i have stuff home to do it every other day then go back next tuesday again for to be checked by BCN and Surgeon. So all good just slower but, I'm happy.

Thought the public meeting regarding closes our unite i was wrong its next Monday lol.  Our Unit is second to non. Unlike other hospital when you get your operation  the radiologist and surgeon work together therefore enabling them to make sure they get everything away. Also people can see the oncologist at the other side of it and get  chemo if needed. They all work together they are a fabulous dedicated team. I just pray this unit can be saved.

I hope you have a great break away.

    Best Wishes

    Hi Angela,

How great it is to get some good news for a change. I'm glad to hear that your wound is drying up. It may be a bit slower, but at least it is now moving in the right direction.

I sincerely hope that your public meeting about the closure of your unit goes well next Monday and that you succeed in stopping it.

I hope that you are feeling a little better today having got some positive news.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
