Hair colour during chemo?

Hi everyone I hope you don't think of me as shallow when I ask this as as understand alot of people lose their hair completely like a friend of mine has but I feel terrible that I have blond hair and after not using hair dye since I started chemo in may this year I have shocking black thick roots and I'm going to a family wedding in 2 weeks time on my good week between chemo and I'd feel a hundred times more fresher and normal if I could only dye the hair!

The cancer team can't answer the question they say don't do it just incase you have an allergic reaction with the chemicals in it and mixed with chemo as it goes onto the scalp.

They say henna dyes are safer but not completely safe but they won't work on my colour  I need a very blond one!

I don't know what to do although I have bought a box dye it's here staring at me now! (It's got no ammonia but has got other chemicals in it)

Anyone else dyed their hair during chemo or know of anyone else who has?

Ive done my 4th cycle now and 2 more to go!

Can Anyone help?

  • Hi,

I'm 51 and about to start treatment on 19th January 2021 and my hair is dyed blonde and I will probably end up with all shades as my hair grows. I'm going give the cold cap ago so it would be good to know if Holland and Barratt got back to you over a blonde natural tint.

    Thanks Ali

  • Hi, I'm about to go through my 6th and  last chemo, used cold cap from start and still have more hair than I expected, I'm having same dilemma about colouring hair, as it's now all grey instead of blonde, considering going light  brown , but not sure what I can use, could anyone suggest what I could use

  • Hi all, I am now 18 weeks post chemo and was lucky enough to lose a lot but not all my hair so the  style looked the same just thinner. Before chemo I had dyed my hair med brown for years , not sure how much of it was already grey, it's now very grey with some dark and the new hair is growing a mix of both. I have only recently felt comfortable facing the outside world now it's growing back but so fed up of the grey as it puts years on me.

I know experts say to leave colouring for at least 6-12 months but I've asked my hairdresser and she has already been tinting a  customers hair for a while even though she started doing it not long after chemo and said it looks fab! Should I take the plunge? I mean what's the worst that could happen ? It's not likely to make me lose all my hair - Is it???

  • Hi,

I was in a similar position.

I have had 5 sessions of chemo and luckily, aside from some thinning have experienced no hair loss. I've found my hair has become a little fluffy and prone to breaking a bit.

I dye my hair darker so I'm not sure if it'll be of any help in going blonde.

I had terrible regrowth, and the colour had faded so it looked awful. I took the risk and bought a semi permanent hair dye (it was a loreal one). I've used it before with no issue but did a patch test in case ive developed a sensitivity. Its come out great, no different to normal - my hair has a shine to it, i did find that i lost maybe a few more strands than normal but it looks far healthier now.

  • Thanks for this, my hairdresser has suggested I just go for a tint for now as I don't want a block colour, as my hair is pretty dark at the back but only about an inch long, she'll tint the longer hair at the front as a tint needs to be wrapped in foils to the root, at least the very grey at the front will be mainly covered.

How long did you wait until you put your first colour on?

    many thanks
