Pain 10 months after Lobectomy for Lung Cancer

Hi I was diagnosed with nsclc in July last year, I had a small tumour in my upper left lung and microscopic cells were found in one of my lymph nodes. I was told I was lucky that the cancer was caught in early stages and was operable.  6 weeks after diagnosis I had half of my left lung removed.  This operation was very painful but recovery didn't take that long really.  I was given chemo which finished in December and went back to work in January.  However, I do still have pain which feels like it's in my left breast and in the centre of my chest.  I also have numbness to the breast.  I have had 3 clear scans and was just wondering if anyone has had the same operation and if they still had pains 10 months after the op.  The doctor doesn't seem concerned with the pain as the scans have been clear.

Thanks

Thank you to everyone who replied and praying for good health. I've not been on here for a while. I am now 3 yrs cancer free! Happily the pain has mostly gone but still get occasional pain to my lung through my back but nothing I can't handle. I also have sum numbness to my the side of my breast and rib, but a small price to pay I think. I am still unusually tired  sometimes thoughand just accepted this is now me and rest if I need to.

    Good luck everyone. Karen x

  • Hi Sophie, I saw red when I read your post! I don't know what your ex has to say about anything in your life, but where does he get off telling you to get back to work? I'm sorry to read about your Dad. I don't know anything about your situation, i.e. if your ex is supporting you or why he has a say in any of this. I just get so upset when others try and tell us to move on after being diagnosed with cancer and having surgery and/or treatment. They would be the ones to lament on and on I'm sure if they were walking in our shoes. Then you losing your Dad at this time adds to your stress. I think its too soon for you to return to work, especially if you will be going to a new job.

    Take care

  • Wow read your post and I am aghast that your ex does not realise what is involved in fighting cancer. Pain is hard to deal with and bereavement just tops up your quota for endurance. Do not allow yourself to be pushed around. You are an adult able to read your body and decide when you can function to the level of getting a job. Till then apply for job seekers allowance and see if you can get any benefits to maintain your independence till you feel well enough to work. It may even be that you can no longer work consult your doctors for an opinion as social security will want to know. He simply needs to get off your back and pay maintenance for his child.  Keep well dear!

  • Hi Ginette,

Was really interested in you reply to Karen's post. I too have had a similar operation to yourself. Mine was done on the 27th Oct 2014 at the Bristol Royal. like yourself I am still experience some discomfort. Mainly soreness in my lower ribs and sometimes pain in heart area and back. Kinda seems odd that the discomfort is on both sides.

After reading your post I feel reassured that all is Normal.

    Best wishes

  • Hi everyone

I was diagnosed with lung cancer in November 2014 (small cell) and my tumour was 6.3 cm aged 50.  I had an upper lobectomy (left lung) and had 2/3rds removed. Had chemotherapy for 15 weeks which ended in May 2015. Trying to come to terms with what has happened is difficult although getting a lot of support. Back to work (4 days) and although it is tiring it takes my mind off things. Had a good prognosis but like many of you I am now suffering back ache near where I had my op. My nurse seems to think that my body is reacting to being back at work and active. Reassuring to hear that some of you are experiencing the same type of pain. I thought I would be back yo full fitness by now but I think the lung takes a long time to heal. Have an appointment in March with my consultant but wondering if I should have a scan/xray sooner?

    Keep well everyone.

  • Hi folks

Sorry in my last post I meant to say non small cell stage 2b. Not small cell as I previously said. Get confused sometimes!!!! Nurse has said it is 'chemo brain' !

    Hi Laura,

You could say I was lucky as my lung cancer was picked up on a heart scan. Although my operation was a complete success and all cancer removed from the right lower lobe. Unfortunately it had already spread to my left lung. No chemo for me. I tested positive for EGFR and will eventually be put on a targeted drug (Tarceva)

At this moment in time it seems to be stable. I have a ct scan every 3 months. One thing I have learnt is that no amount of worrying will change things so I just get on and enjoy life.

It's a good feeling going back to work and doing normal everyday things.

    Wishing you well

  • Hi Roz

You are so right about enjoying life now as no one knows what is around the corner. Starting a 'where now' course and hopefully that will help me do this.

    Take care and keep well.
