Hair growth after chemo - how do I look after it and will my 'normal' hair come through?

Hi everyone, finished my chemo at the beginning of May. Lost all hair.

Now starting to grow back but head hair is really fluffy. I had heard that it can come back like this.

My question is to I have to cut it to get rid of whats growing now or will if left alone will it start growing as 'normal' hair?

Thank you x

  • I need to find out about the cold cap.. as I don’t know much about it… I will get a wig but unsure whether I will use it or a scarf… what is a buff?

  • Hi there, sending strength to you. I hope I am allowed to post a You Tube link on here but I found this after I started cold cap and it’s a mine of useful information including interviews with the PaxMan founder. I had only had one round with the cold cap (taxol plus carbo) because the paclitaxel caused a severe reaction.  I am now only on carboplatin which does not require cold cap apparently. Happy to share my experience if it helps. I am going to be quite unusual in that I had masses of thick long healthy hair, used a cold cap once and am now 6+1 on from my last taxol so just at the point where it may be stopping shedding. I can definitely recommend some hair wash strategies if you cold cap and have thick hair. I’ve personally much more than expected and the average but my body has reacted really strongly to the Chemo. I don’t regret it because capping was bearable, having some hair has given me options (could still buzz it if I wanted) and there is some evidence to say that capping helps with stronger and quicker regrowth. That is tbc in my case.  As we go into autumn hats have been my friend, so the time of year may be a decider in what you do. Best wishes,

Ps I love the dandelion metaphor from the other ladies. Can really see it. I am rocking more of the mad scientist who has stuck their finger in a plug look. Think Doc in back to the future but sadly with less hair!

  • Thnx so much!!!! I go to see the Doctor next week regarding my chemotherapy consultation so I was going to mention the cold cap! Beanie’s help going into Aurumn. I will discuss with the Doc. Thanks for your lengthy reply. I am not familiar with the cocktail of chemo drugs I will be receiving as yet!

  • Thnx for this I will check it out!
