Breast clinic

Hi,

I found a hard area on one of my breasts, assumed it would be nothing but saw gp a week and a half ago anyway just to be safe. Went feeling a bit stupid & assuming/hoping she would tell me she either couldn't feel it or was perfectly normal. She referred me to the breast clinic. They phoned at the end of last week and I have an appointment this week now.

Not thinking about it too much & assuming everything will be fine as my age etc has me low risk.

But I'm just wondering if anyone could tell me what actually happens at the breast clinic? I got the appt letter in the post after they phoned but it doesn' give any info about what actually happens when you're there.

The man on the phone when they phoned me to arrange the appt said it would last for 3 hours. Just wondering what would last that long.

Also wondering if they weigh you while you'e there? Strange question I know, sorry.

Thanks in advance for any info

(Breast clinic is in Northern Ireland by the way)

Thanks!

  • Hi

I went to breast clinic 2 weeks ago on arrival I filled a form in with an history, medications etc

then I had mammogram (I'm 43) will depend on age as younger boobs are too dense for mammogram I then had ultrasound and they then did a biopsy followed by a metal marker and repeat mammogram to check marker was in the right place. I am getting my results Wednesday.

you may only have one of these tests it will depend on what they see I was ther less than 2 hours for all of it.

I'm going to say try not to worry but honestly you're going to it's only natural try to stay busy and relax as much as possible x

    Hi Cre,

A very warm welcome to our forum, although I'm sorry for the reason that has brought you here. Ekb has outlined the tests that you are likely to have at the clinic. If they carry out a biopsy you will have 1-2 weeks wait before you get the results of this.

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 11 years and have never had my weight checked.

You will find the staff very helpful and reassuring and I'm sure that you will get on well.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Hoping for good news.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks very much for this - really helpful. Good luck for Wednesday x

  • Thanks for this. Sorry to hear you've had 2 bouts of breast cancer. I hope you are well at the minute?

Do you mind me asking, after your first appointment if they were able to give you any information at all?

I'm 29 so really am just assuming this lump will be explained easily by something non-serious. I was hoping/assuming the GP would have done that to be honest when she felt it so I'm now hoping I'll leave the breast clinic appt with them being able to say it's nothing to worry about- would that be something they would do there and then on the day?

Thanks again for the info & hope you are well x

  • Hi all,

I hope you're all well, I'm new here and hope I'm posting in the right section. It just last night i noticed that my right breast areola is bigger than my left. This is new. My right breast also has lot of pain. GP sending me to breast clinic.

I know you guys are not drs but wonder if you have any idea what this might be, the only research on the topic with this particular set of symptoms leads to a worrying diagnosis of potential inflammatory breast cancer. I'm.worried sick and feel simply awful and can't keep my mind still.

I'm 41, anyone else had similar experience or know of other explanations.

  • I was told they were concerned. And to bring someone with me to the follow up appointment and I went there thinking I was wasting everyone's time!!!! Still hoping it's worry for nothing but I did feel that he was trying to prepare me for bad news. I didn't even ask any questions I just ran out saying thanks !!

    Hi Cre,

I was 60 when I first attended. I have had 3 scares with breast lumps. On all occasions the surgeon immediately thought that it was cancerous. He was right 2 times out of 3. However, it is only by having a biopsy that you can be certain that there is no cancerous tissue present, as my experience has taught me.

Only 1 person in 8 referred to the clinic will have breast cancer, so the odds are still good for you.

I do hope that you get good news.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

  • Hi Ekb,

  • Hi Jolamine

Thank you, I will come back and let you all know how I get on x

    Hi Maria,

Welcome to our forum. I am afraid that I cannot offer any help about your symptoms, as mine were different.

The way you are feeling is perfectly normal. Try to steer clear of Dr Google, as this will only heighten your anxiety. Worry won't change the outcome, so  try to keep yourself busy to help pass the time until you get your appointment.

Please let us know how you get on. we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
