I didn't have a colposcopy as didn't have any abnormal cells.  He examined me said I looked fine and I got dressed. It was only as I was on my way out he said as you are here now we will do a biopsy and that's how they found out I had cancer. They were all really shocked when the biopsy results came back.

How many times have you tested positive for HPV?

Sounds like you were very lucky indeed - I can only imagine the shock.
 

I've only tested positive once but this is my first smear in five years so I could have had it for some time. I've been having pelvic pain for about 6 months which is what has triggered the various investigations/tests. I know there are so many other things it could be and that cancer is a very rare outcome but I'm just terrified.

Hi guys just wondering if anyone can help me understand. So I've had 2 positive HPV results after my first positive I had a colopspy which came back cin 1. Now got my smear results back and still have HPV but no abnormal cells. Does this mean I don't have CIN 1??? IM CONFUSED.

Yes. You can have HPV without abnormal cells, so your CIN1 has gone-it can regress and clear up. It’s a good result! 

Ok but I didn't think a smear test could tell you if you had cin 1 I thought you had to have a biopsy.

But if the smear test has not identified abnormal cells, you don’t have CIN1, or indeed any type of CIN. You said your test didn’t identify any abnormal cells?

No it said it didnt but I'm sure my first test didnt either but when I had my biopsy done it came back. 

The smear test checks for types of HPV that can cause cell changes. If you have any of these types of HPV, the cells from the smear test are looked at to see if there are any changes to them. If there are not, that’s confirmation that you don’t have CIN. 

Ok thank you for helping me understand I think possible this was my 3rd smear. All of had hpv but I think the last one I must of also had abnormal cells as I went in for a colopsy.  

No problem. Abnormal cells would mean having a colposcopy for a closer look/testing, so your results are definitely better this time, since you don’t need the colposcopy.
