Scared about hysterectomy suspected ovarian cancer

Hi, I've been a member of this forum for a couple of months after being diagnosed with suspected early stage ovarian cancer, tomorrow I'm having a hysterectomy and removal of omentum and I'm so scared of the operation and I'm afraid of what they're going to find, my surgeon said that it's not definately cancer but I'm being treated as if it is, I've been coping ok up until now as I haven't had any symptoms yet but now the op is tomorrow I've lost my nerve so I was wondering if anyone had anything positive to say about having a hysterectomy, thanks

  • Hi Mellybelly

I had a abdominal hysterectomy for cancer in June last year.

Before the lead up to that I had never been to hospital and was petrified. I didn't even think I'd be able to walk into the hospital as I would collapse first.

The actual operation was fine honestly. The recovery was tiring but nothing you can't handle.

I kept my ovaries, then found out 6 months later I had a complex cyst on them so had to go back into hospital for them to reopen my stomach and take them out. Wish they had just gone in the first operation! Although again the operation was nothing to worry about.

I'm on HRT now and I feel better than when I had kept my ovaries.

  • Thank you so much for your reply. I had a minor procedure done 12 months ago under anaesthetic and was fine.  I feel giddy at the thought of the unknown.

Didnt even know I had cysts just a large fibroid. Dr gave me a wait and see approach if I didn't want hysterectomy but it's getting bigger.

But then in threw in that one of the cysts didnt look typical of a cyst so why give me a wait n see option

He said may not be able to do keyhole which worried me. Then the cyst comment so not sure if I can keep my ovaries. I think the cyst whatever it is as scared me more than anything. Scary thing is I use baby talc everyday and I've recently found out the dangers of it.

Best case scenario is keyhole surgery saving ovaries and removing cysts and fibroid.  The unknown is terrifying.

What was the outcome of your cysts?

  • Ah ok I thought you were worried about the operation which was fine.

You need to find out more info on your cyst, is it simple or complex? Also did they tell you how big the cyst was? Give their secretary a call to find out more information to put your mind at rest. They noticed mine looked complex on a ultrasound  then a week later they gave my a ct scan to confirm and 2 weeks later I was in hospital having them removed.

They don't do keyhole if they think the cyst is complex as they need to make sure they get rid of it all.

  • I have emailed his secretary regarding it. As when I had the ultrasound it was to look for a missing mirena coil and check on fibroid.

The lady doing it said I had 2 cysts one on each ovary.  3.4cm the one . 6.1cm the other but not to worry they look benign.

So for my consultant to then drop that on me without any explanation was a shock. I thought they will be removed and thsts it but now I dont know.

I am a little worried about the op as I was hoping to preserve ovaries to stop immediate menopause.  Now I dont know what I'm waking up to.

Thank you so much for your replies
