Introduction: I am retired, 71 years old and had a biopsy which shows prostate cancer

Hi I just wanted to say hello and tell a little bit about me. I’m retired now and 71yrs old. I have been feeling fine but recently started to notice more trips to the loo and at night four or five times I needed to get up . Members of my family have all had prostate problems ie swollen prostate , so I assumed I had the same problem. However, not to be, I had a biopsy which shows I have cancer.
I have a wife and two children, four grandchildren and I have worked all my life, from the age of 18 yrs to the age of 70 when I took retirement. I am the owner of a Bernese Mountain dog that I walk every day. I support a below average football team in the championship so I am used to disappointment. Career wise, I was a police officer, then I worked in the police control room. I have been an IT teacher, worked at Next as a sales assistant, then at a Hospice for three years, after that I worked at a company which posted volunteers to different jobs so they could get back to work. Finally I worked at a court as an usher.
Now I am retired

  • Hello A-Jay and a warm welcome to our forum,

Thank you for coming here and sharing your story with us and telling us about your prostate cancer diagnosis and also a little bit about you and your family. 2 children, 4 grandchildren and a mountain dog - I can imagine there are a lot of fun and exciting moments in your house and walking the dog every day certainly is a nice relaxing and healthy activity. You made me laugh when you mentioned that you support a below average football team and that you are used to disappointment as a result. I guess whenever your team does win, it's a big unexpected celebration! You have had an interesting career doing lots of different things from being a police officer, an IT teacher, working at Next and at a hospice, being an usher, you certainly have tried many different things which really expands your horizons and makes you discover so many different aspects of life!

I hope that you are enjoying retirement and making the most of it to do things you enjoy. Have you heard anything more since your diagnosis about what your treatment plan might be?

You may have a lot of questions racing through your head after receiving the biopsy results so don't hesitate to get in touch with our cancer nurses at any point on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I will now let other members of our community who have been affected by prostate cancer come and say hello and share their story with you. It helps to talk to others sometimes who are or have been in a similar boat.

    Best wishes,
