Struggling with Radiotherapy side effects. Can anyone help?

I have 2 different cancers, breast and lung.

I had 20 sessions of radiotherapy for lung, 8 weeks ago, and I am still extremely breathless. Had a course of antibiotics which did lesson the phlegm, but I am still laying down after about 4 hrs out of bed.

I am 74 yrs old, but usually fit and active.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

  • Hello sanpatrick

I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling with some side effects of chest radiotherapy. It sounds like it's been a difficult and frustrating time for you.

We know that the side effects of radiotherapy can continue for some time after treatment ends, and for some people, those side effects can take longer to improve. Do make sure that you let your doctor or specialist cancer nurse know that you're still struggling with things so that they can continue to monitor your health and step in with any additional treatments or advice that may be appropriate.

I don't know if you have had other treatments for your diagnoses or if you are currently taking any medications, but it's worth remembering that they may also be contributing to the symptoms that you're experiencing.

We have some information about breathing problems with cancer that may be helpful, but if you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses for some advice and support, you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

In the meantime, take care of yourself and I hope that things improve for you.

    Best wishes,
