New to all this and working out how to deal with the news I was given last week that I have bowel cancer

Hello,

I was diagnosed with bowel cancer on Thursday last week. It has taken the weekend to sink in. I am 58, married with 4 children. Luckily, it is a small ish tumour and has been identified early. But, I have been told I need an operation to remove 6-8 inches of my large intestine.
My father died of bowel cancer aged 68, so all a little worrying.
Just working out how to deal with this.

Mike

  • Hi Mike,

I hope you're doing ok?  I have no words of wisdom for you, I'm afraid.  I'm also 58 with a partner and kids and have just been diagnosed with laryngeal cancer one week ago today.  My surgery is early next month.  The only thing I've learned so far is to take just one day at a time.  I usually rush through things, overthink and overplan, but it just can't work for this.  I have my CT scan today, so just planning to get that done after a day's work and worry about tomorrow tomorrow.

Best of luck and let me know if you find the meaning of life before me :)
