My journey with prostate cancer

I guess I’m one of the lucky ones as my Doctors surgery calls me once a year for a Medical ( I call it my MOT ) I’m a man aged 73 years old and in good health . I went for a medical two years ago where they detected my PSA had risen to 7.6 from previous year of 4.6 I was sent for a scan and then biopsy where they detected prostate cancer which was contained within my Prostate the consultant said I had three options monitor , radiotherapy and prostate removed he swayed me towards radiotherapy and explained all the possible side effects !!! I had hormone injections one every 3 months and 20 sessions of radiotherapy fortunately I had not one side effect from radiotherapy but the hormone injection completely wiped out my libido which is now returning 18 months after treatment finished my PSA is now 0.12 which I’m informed is very good so all signs look positive I would strongly recommend any male over 50 get tested yearly I had no symptoms at all just getting up for the toilet once or twice a night so due to my Doctors diligence and the treatment I received,  my future looks positive

  • Hi Greaves28,

Thank you so much for sharing your inspirational story. It's so nice to hear from positive experiences like yours which I am sure will inspire and comfort many members of our community who are currently going through the same. It sounds like treatment was a real success for you and it's all looking really positive.

As you rightly pointed out, it's always a good idea to get tested and to go and speak to someone when you notice anything unusual. Well done for acting so quickly when you had no symptoms but noticed you were starting to get up more frequently in the night to go to the toilet.

Best wishes and I hope everything will be completely fine from now on for you,
