Had treatment for Neuroendocrine Carcinoma on tongue last year. A year later, a biopsy has shown the tumour is still there. Absolutely floored by this news

Hi

Just to introduce myself.  I am 64 year old and was diagnosed with Neuroendocrine Carcinoma on the base of my tongue in June of 2024.  I had to go through various surgical ops in preparation for the start of chemotherapy/radiotherapy.  The tumour was large enough to affect my eating hence a PEG was fitted, its continued growth threatened to close my air passage so a tracheostomy was performed.  I had chemotherapy and after 6 sessions the tumour was still growing. The next stage was radiation therapy which I had 5 sessions a day for 6 weeks.  I really struggled post radiotherapy with the recovery.  The next step was the PET scan but prior to that I attended a consultant appointment to be told I was clear of the cancer.  The PET scan highlighted that the cancer was still evident.  This prompted another biopsy which came back clear.  As I was still in a lot of pain the consultant arranged for another biopsy to give reassurance that the cancer was clear.  I was told today that this biopsy had shown the tumour was still there.  I was floored by this news.

  • Hello Randerso

I'm so very sorry to hear that, despite all the treatment you've been through, the most recent PET scan and biopsy have revealed that there are still cancer cells present. I can only imagine how devastating that must have been for you to hear.

What has the specialist said about the next steps in your care? I hope that you feel supported by the hospital team and that you have the love and care from family and friends around you.

Hopefully members of the Cancer Chat community who understand what it's like to be told this kind of news will reply to your post before long to share their advice and tips for coping with you. In the meantime if it would help to talk with one of our nurses, you're welcome to give them a call. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch if it helps to have a safe space to put down in writing how you're feeling. We're here for you Randerso.
