Bladder cancer Post BCG overactive bladder

Hey guys,

Im Garry and was diagnosed with bladder cancer in february this year age 34, I had my firdt turbt followed by 6 instillations of BCG treatment following which I didnt have a great time very frequent urination and spasms this passed about 2 weeks following my BCG and was bad but tolerable.

Results back as high grade NON muscle invasive

A few weeks later I had my routine cystoscope and there were areas of suspicion so off for another turbt which went well the biospy revealed no signs of cancer.

Started bcg again around 6 weeks ago by the third instilation i wasn't able to hold the treatment for the full 2 hours tapping img out at about 1h 10 mins, the usual followed very irritated bladder peeing all the time but nothing i couldnt cope with but as time passed the symptoms worsened

Im opening my bladder as oftern as every few minutes when there's anything in there and when its empty i get horrific spams and blood and still urges to go.

Visited doctor who did urine culture and perscribed antibiotics which did nothing to help a day before they were due to finish i wasnt doing too well lots of spasms and pain literally no sleep some nights others i was lucky to get 30 mins before having to urinate this culminating in my partner phoning 111 for advice and me ending up in an ambulance long story shirt more tests more antibiotics and still no help i was at my wiys end.

In eventually got an appointment with my urologist yesterday who perscribed yet more antibiotics and 2 types of medication to help spasms which seem to have helped a little with the pain but the frequent urination just won't quit I literally need to urinate between every few minutes and every 15 minutes very occasionally an hour if I fall asleep.

Im at my wits end with both being tied to the toilet and lack of sleep to the point where its really affecting my mental health has anyone else expirienced this abd can help reassure me things will return to normal at some point.

Sorry for the rambling post i needed it off my chest for referance ive been to the toilet 6 times while writting this post.

Side notes

I'm drinking just water

Avoiding foods considered irritants

Stopped smoking

  • Thankyou Daniel i will let you know how he takes the first dose. A bit worried about his second dose and him keeping it in for 2 hours cos has you say they send you home with it in. I dont know what we will do if he has to go on our way home. It takes us 50 mins to get home in quiet traffic so god only knows what it will be like on a Saturday. I was wondering if his cancer nurse might just let him stay in the unit till it's time to get rid of it. I keep reading your letter on here about your journey and it gives me hope and makes me feel better to think my Ronnie might get through it.

Good luck with the windows and let me know how the test goes.

    Regards Renny

  • Hi Daniels

Just to let you know my husband Ronnie had his first BCG and was fine. We managed to get home after 1 hour and he kept the BCG in for 2. We went back last Saturday for the second dose but he had a urine infection and so he cant have it till it's clear. So it looks like he will have to miss 2 dates before he can get the second one done. We were told it would not push him back with the treatment so he was happy. We did what you did and he didnt take a drink after 8pm the night before and all was good. No pain at all. We were in and out in 10 mins.

Hope all is well with you.

    Regards Renny

  • Hi Daniels

I was woundering how you went on with your last cystoscopy. Hope it was clear again. My husband is getting his 6th dose this Saturday and he did what you did when you were having your BCG and he has been fine. A small twing the first pee but after that all OK. We are hoping he will get a clear when he goes for the cyctoscopy but we dont know when that will be. Hope he has to wait a few week as he could do with a bit of a break after the 6 BCG treatment.

    Take care stay safe

    Renny

  • Hi I'm glad your husbands treatment went well. I think you go back for a cystoscopy 6 weeks after the last treatment. The cystoscopy is really nothing to worry about just remember to empty his bladder before leaving the hospital. I haven't had mine yet thought it was due in June but it's in July.  Will be expecting a call/letter any day now obviously depending how busy they are. There is a lot of covid in our local hospital again and it is filling up with patients. Hope your husbands check up goes well but if not as my consultant told me we can scrape out the bladder lining again. But fingers crossed he will be ok.

  • Hi Daniels,

    Many thanks for your reply,

My husband was due to have his 6th BCG last Saturday but a small amount of blood stopped it and he has to go back this Saturday for his last one. I will let you know how things go. He did the same procedure as you and apart from getting the shivers a few times which his nurse was glad because she said it was working because of it, he has had no after affects from the treatment so thank you for your sound advice on what to do. Good luck this month with your checkup. We hope all goes well. Please let us know how it went.

    Kind regards Renny

  • Hi had to go to our hospital walk in center today my Ronnie has a urine infection so they gave him 5 days antibiotics. So where hoping it will be gone for Saturday as last Saturday they wouldn't give him his last BCG cos of a bit of blood in the urine. Fingers crossed

    Regards Renny

  • Hi Daniel

Sad news about my husband the BCG didn't work and he has to have his bladder out and prostate. in the next 3 weeks. At 82 they say he is a fit man and they think they can get rid of the cancer. It's going to be a long journey for both of us but we will get through it together. We have no family so just rely on each other. Hope your still doing well

    Regards Renny

  • Hi Renny  sorry to hear the BCG hasnt worked. But if he is fit and they think they can get rid of the cancer by removing the bladder then there is still hope. I know it will be a long road to recovery especially if he is having his prostate removed at the same time. Its surprising how many men have to have their prostate removed. I finally had my annual check up last Saturday, all was ok ,no sign of cancer. Delay was caused by so many people needing treatment and with covid in the hospitals the bare minimum of patients are being seen.Hope everything goes well for him.

  • Thank you i will let you know

    Regards from Renny
