Father-in-law sudden diagnosis - 2 weeks to live

Until 10 days ago my father-in-law was a well man but feeling a bit 'off'. He got taken to hospital with suspected blood clot and when treatment didn't work they did further tests and have told us it's bile ducts and liver cancer which they suspect also spread to pancreas .... They said he's got 2 weeks to live and nothing they can do.

He's now been sent home with morphine etc and very yellow, cold, itchy skin ... To say we are in shock is an understatement! How could we not have known before!

Has anyone else had this kind of shock diagnosis with weeks ? My husband is a shell and he himself has just glazed over in shock.

Thanks for listening

  • I'm an only child too, can make things quite intense!
No wonder it's hit your husband hard - I'm so sorry.
We're both in such similar situations. My husband does have some experience of death, but he's so upset too by my mum's diagnosis. She and my dad are such integral parts of our lives. She's more of a mother to him than his own mum, if I'm honest.
It's very tough, you're right. And no correct way, everyone and every family is so different. It's been good to message you here, thank you.
I hope your mum has a good night and you have a relaxing sleep. xx

  • Hi Celeste

It's all sounding very similar to your situation here atm. Just sending huge hugs , it's so hard to comprehend when they give the diagnosis so sudden and can do nothing :( My FIL also has the lactolase and the oral morphine , plus an EOL package which hasn't been touched yet.

We have his 3 sons here atm so it's just about making memories atm and just being together. I've even recorded him talking before that stops fully for my husband.

Sending love to you all on here

  • Thank you, and sending hugs too.

It's the not being able to do anything that's so awful, essentially sent home from the doctor to die. Exactly, making memories, even the smallest things, really count. Taking each day.

I hope you enjoy the time you have together.

    Lots of Love xxx
