Wife 31 with stage IV colon cancer - need some help

Hi,

My wife who is only 31 has been diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer, we have a 7 month old baby so as you can imagine this news has devastated us.

we have been told she has multiple sites on her Liver therefore surgery is not an option and have been told she will get chemotherapy to help manage / slow down the rumours.

I would just like to know if anyone else has been in the same position and if their treatment plan was the same or are they offered any further or driffrent treatments. Also does anyone know of private clinics offering alternative treatments such as targeted treatments that may not be offered on the NHS?

Thanks for any help in advance

  • Thank you Harry.  To many young people getting bowel cancer, being treated for all sorts of things without the professionals thinking that they could have bowel cancer and checking it. lesliex

  • Hi Leslie / Harry

Thanks my wife has now contacted the Christie for an appointment so we will take it from there, will keep you updated.

I completely agree that people who are considered too young to have this disease are not being sent for the appropriate testing, I understand that 999 out of 1000 people in this age group will not have bowel cancer but surely sending some one for a colonoscopy and saving that one person would be worth it.

My wife was pregnant at the time her symptoms started and was fobbed of as pregnancy / post natal issues I kept nagging her to go back and edventually after she applied pressure to the GP she was sent for a colonoscopy.

I feel I need to do some work about spreading this message and plan to do some work on this and major fundraising once I help my wife to get better - I would hate for my son to get to this age and find himself in the same position due to the lack of understanding we currently see when it comes to bowel cancer.

  • Hi Jamie,

Great that your wife has contacted The Christie. It is a world class institution for bowel cancer. One of the very best. And I agree, failure to diagnose bowel cancer in young people is something that needs urgent attention.

  • Hi jamie

i hope ur wife is still doing ok! And that u are well ur wife seems similar to me and I was wondering if u got any success out of finding about sirt?

  • Hi d14 and Jamie,

I'm so sorry you're both going through something so difficult.

I've been trawling forums to find someone in a similar boat to me: recently diagnosed stage 4 bowel cancer, 36yrs old/young, very young children...desperately looking for a treatment to keep my children from being without a mummy.

Sick of the word palliative. Having read this thread I'm going to look at SIRT too.

Jamie - how are things with you, your wife and baby? I hope you're all doing ok.

D14, what treatment/s have you been offered?

    Thank you,

    Pepsi

  • Dear Jamie,

I’ve just seen this and wanted to let you know that I am in the same situation as your wife. I was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer when my son was 3 months old (he’s now 10 months)

If your wife would like to get in touch with someone who’s going through the same thing then let me know.

    Best wishes to you both,

    Katy

  • Hi Jamie,

Just wanted to let you know that we are in a very similair situation too. My partner is 31 years old and has stage IV bowel cancer, he also has multple sites on his liver. He just had his bowel surgery a couple of weeks ago and is recovering from it. We have our first appointment with Oncology tomorrow (we are based in Edinburgh). I am very scared that they will tell us it palliative and not operable.

Please keep us posted on the SIRT treatment.

    All the best,

    Karen
