Hello!
I'm posting on behalf of my Dad who is coming to the end of his 6 week radiotherapy treatment for throat cancer. He was hospitalised earlier this week as the side effects are getting pretty bad. He's unable to eat anything other than very little amounts of ensure & tries his best with yoghurt, but finds eating and drinking extremely difficult. As a result he's physically weak due to weight loss, mentally out of it and generally having a bad time.
Prior to coming into hospital he was living on a sofa bed at his ex-wifes house alongside their autistic son (my step brother) - long story short, he became technically homeless a couple of years ago and he's been sofa surfing ever since but this is where he's been staying frequently.
Its been difficult for them throughout his treatment and I feel he's in need of greater care, but I'm struggling to find concrete information on whats available. I'm currently living at my mums whilst saving for a deposit, otherwise I'd house and look after him but this isn't a possibility right now.
I need some pointers on where to go - can I get in touch with the council on his behalf to try and get accommodation through them? Would the hospital keep him post treatment? Are hospice services available that can help?
I'm planning on going to Maggies tomorrow to speak with them, but I thought this could be a good place to start.
Thank you.
