My brother in law has just been diagnosed with bowel cancer in his early forties. We do not know what stage he is at yet. How do I support him and my wife in the best way through this difficult time?

I was the same and everyone just said to me "what do you need from me?". That meant the world to me - even better than "let me know if you need anything." They were there and willing to help for anything.
In Practical terms, help with lifts to hospital for appointments were a huge help - especially as I started Radio and Chemo. And days in between were just nice to have someone to talk to, if anf when I needed it. Small things like sometimes preparing food, doing dishes and house hold chores while my wife concentrating on my needs were a huge help. Sometimes they took kids to various activities and to/from school.
IMO, A good support network is vital and I believe it brings the very best out of people you know when they know you have cancer.
