I weight 16st and I am scared of having an endoscopy

Hi

I tried to have an endsocopy at the beggining of august this year and it wasn't very successful because I was allergic to fenytal.

Today my consultant called me and said that they are going to try the endoscopy again but this time with propofol which is a stronger drug,  I am concerned that I won't wake up from or have some kind of heart attack during it because I weigh 16stone and I am 5ft 4inches tall.

Please can you put my mind at ease.

thank you

Lindsey

  • Bless your heart....

Try not to be frightened.. I'm sure all will go ok.

Wishing you all the best x

  • Hi Lindsey and thank you for posting.

To reassure you anaesthetists have to do many years of training to be able to do the job that they do. Each patient is individually assessed, taking into account factors like weight and general health, so that they know how much sedation to use.  You are also very closely monitored by them and the team throughout the procedure.

Take care, and I think that before your endoscopy it would be good for you to let them know about your anxieties, as it will help them understand you and how you will be feeling on the day.

    Sarah.

  • Hi Sarah, I told them that I was nervous last time but it didn't help telling them I am not looking forward to having it again I don't know whether I will be able to go through with it it wasn't pleasant time I couldn't even swallow the tube, I was supposed to be sedated then but I could feel everything, is propofol stronger with

    Any advice would be appreciated

    thank you

    Lindsey

  • Hello Lindsey and thank you for getting back in touch with us.

Propofol is a sedative used to make people sleepy during a medical procedure. It is usually very effective therefore it is very likely to work for you.

I can see why you are worried but it does seem that the endoscopy team are aware of your situation and are giving you another type of sedation.  So please do trust that they are doing what is best for you.

I hope your endoscopy goes well.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • Hi

thank you for your message, I have read that there are risks involved with propofol sedation and that is what is putting me off having the endoscopy. I am scared something bad will happen  to me like having a heart attack or my blood pressure going to high or too low.

Are any off these likely to happen?

     Thank you Lindsey

  • Hi again Lyndsey

There are potential risks with many clinical tests and procedures though these are usually pretty uncommon . The benefits of having tests done usually outweigh any small risk and I'm sure you will be relieved once it's over and the results are back.

If the doctors thought there was any extra risk because of your health or weight you would be advised - people far heavier will have had these procedures. No one will be able to guarantee a procedure will be 100% risk free, though I imagine it would be unusual to have a heart attack in the middle of an endoscopy. You will be monitored and there will be people in the room with you at all times.

I wish you all the best

    Wanda

  • Hi Wanda,

Thank you for your reply, I am still scared to go for the endoscopy with propofol, I think it is because when I had a hip replacement in 2018 they cut a femoral vein so the operation lasted 8 hours and I nearly died from it.  Since then I have found it very hard to trust them and it has made me nervous if I have to go for a procedure.  Is there any otherway that they could diagnose celiac disease eg: barium swallow/meal etc.  I have read that their can be complications with sedation and this is what is putting me off going for one.  I am too nervous and scared to have propofol because I am scared that I won't wake up or I will stop breathing (I watched a youtube video where this actually happened) granted that paitient is alive and well, but I don't want that to happen to me.  I am thinking of telling my consultant not to bother with it. because I honestly don't think I can go through that again and I am scared of propofol.

    not sure what to do.

    Lindsey

  • I'm 5" 2 and weigh a lot more than 16 stone, I had an endoscopy last march, this was just after I had a heart attack, all went well and I had no issues, I don't recall much about it as they sedated me during the procedure, I expected it to be worse than it was.

I also had to have surgery this jan where I had to be sedated for that as well, that also went well it took them a little longer than expected too, I was very nervous before the surgery as it was risky with my weight and my heart.

I can understand your nervousness and believe they would not do the tests if they felt they were not warranted, try not to worry so much

  • Hi,

thank you for the message and I can't help worrying about it and like I said I don't trust hospitals as much as I used to do since having my hip replacement where I nearly died during sugery.

I just don't want anything bad to happen, I think I am going to tell the consultant not to bother with it I don't think that I will be able to do it being so scared of the procedure with propofol.

thank you for trying to help

    Lindsey

  • Hello and thanks for getting back to us again,

I am not sure whether your consultant would consider a barium swallow but you could ask him.

The doctors have got to choose the most effect test to diagnose your condition so do try if you can to be guided by what they suggest.

I can understand your reluctance to have sedation but they sound like they are doing all they can to be able to carry out this procedure.

At the end of the day it is your decision as to whether or not to go on with the test.

Try if you can to keep an open mind when you talk to the consultant.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
