Palliative care

Hi, my son has tonsil and neck cancer. He has completed all the treatment, but cannot anything down that goes in to his stomach through the rig. He is in hospital at the moment while they try to sort out the best way for him to take food, fluids and drugs. The term palliative care has been mentioned, can anyone tell me if that always means terminal illness. Thank you.

  • Hello Naomi, thank you for your advice. It seemed that my son was sorted regarding pain relief and feeding. He came home from hospital last Friday, and all was good. Then he was sick on Monday night, and through Tuesday. He didn't take any food on Tuesday because he was frightened of  more sickness. However, last night, he was sick several times, although no food was in his stomach to bring up. He is now back in hospital, when I was dropping him off, he was retching in the car, bringing up what looked like blood. In your experience, is this a common thing? He is now on IV fluids, in the best place of course. It's just so worrying, not knowing if this should happen, or if it means something bad.

    Thank you.

  • Hello there

I am sorry to hear your son has had to go back into hospital with sickness and hope the doctors figure out soon what is going on.

There can be many reasons why people are sick so I can't really say what has caused this. It could be something as simple as a bug or it could be some sort of blockage but try not to over think things and wait to hear what the doctors have to say.

Sometimes when people are constantly being sick or retching this in turn can irritate the lining of the gut and may burst a blood vessels which can then bleed.

As you say he is in the best place and I am sure the doctors will run any tests they need to get the information they need. In the meantime they will try and manage the nausea and vomiting in whatever way they can to keep him comfortable.

I really hope he feels better soon and can come home again.

    Here is you need us.

    All the best

    Naomi

  • Thank you, Naomi. I know I over analyse things.

I'm sure this is irrelevant, he was able to drink some water at the weekend. I've just looked at one of the bottles and it contains added electrolytes. Given that he's on TwoCal feed, could the water have any thing to do with the sickness.

    Thank you again,

  • Hello and thanks for your further post

I think it's very unlikely that one of the water bottles your son drank that had added electrolytes in it contributed to his sickness.

As my colleague Naomi said there could be many causes for vomiting and I'm sure his doctors are trying to establish the cause in your son's case.

I hope you both know more soon.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Thank you, I know I'm clutching at straws, it was something I thought I'd check out.

    Thanks again.
