Chest infection - do I need to tell my oncologist about this? I'm currently having treatment for stage 3 breast cancer

Iv been to the doctors today as iv had a cough for a couple weeks turns out it’s a chest infection and have been given antibiotics.

currently on herceptin every 3 weeks, I have 7 left out of 18. Zoladex 3 monthly and daily’ letrozole for stage 3 breast cancer. Had my 8 rounds of chemo and  15 days radio last year with left mastectomy in August.

Am I being paranoid my chest infection could be something more? Do I need to tell my oncologist I now have a chest infection?

  • Hello Char1992 and thanks for your post,

I can understand how easy it can be to think that the cough you are experiencing could be something more. Try however if you can, to take one step at a time. You have had a lot of chemotherapy which can have an effect on your immunity which make it easier for you to pick up infections such as a chest infection. Try and see if the antibiotics help clear this up in the first instance and if they don't seem to be helping the cough, then do go back and discuss this with your GP.

Sometimes you may need a different antibiotic if the first one appears not to be working.

When you go for your next Herceptin injection you could mention your concerns.

To also help with the infection try and drink plenty of fluids (2-3) litres and get plenty of rest.

I hope the infection clears up soon but do go back to your GP if you continue to feel unwell.

You are welcome to ring the nurses on the helpline if you would like to talk any of this through.

The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
