Pain 2 weeks after mammogram.

Had a routine mammogram 2 weeks ago and have been in pain (both sides equally) since. The literature provided and information online seems to suggest this is not normal. I'm reading there should be no pain, pain during procedure, pain for a hour after, or occasionally for a couple of days.

I've contacted the local service who said they would get a radiographer to phone me, but I've not heard back.

It's affecting my daily activities, very painful when I take my bra off, sore in shower, having to wear a soft bra to bed. It's also affecting my sleep. I've had my results letter and it's clear. DD and took my period 3 orc4 days later. Over 50 and slightly irregular periods, but only very recently. I have never had breast pain like this during my cycle..

I'm becoming worried something is actually wrong now, an injury, and that it might not improve. Very limited information online about pain lasting this long.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I’m sorry about the breast pain you are still experiencing following your routine mammogram. It’s understandable you’re worried especially because the information you’ve found doesn’t seem to match your experience.

The information leaflets usually say it’s common to experience pain during the test saying the soreness usually lasts for few hours or a few days. But this is based on averages, it does not include everyone. Some women do experience pain that can lasts weeks. It’s not common, but it does occasionally happen. The pain is most likely due to deep bruising or inflammation from the breast compression or due to hormone changes around menopause, which make breast tissue more sensitive.

Taking some pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen will hopefully help and continue to wear a soft supportive bra. Hopefully, the pain should slowly improve over the next couple of weeks.

Do make an appointment to see your GP if the pain is not improving or is getting worse. Or if you notice any redness, heat, swelling on your breast.

I hope things improve for you soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Hello,  I am sorry this happened to you. Have your symptoms improved? The same thing happened to me, I had a mammogram on the 6th January and am still experiencing pain in both breasts. It is like the sort of pain you might get before a period, but 100 times worse and it has lasted for over 3 weeks now, my period came and went in that time. I have never experienced pain like it in my breasts before, it is affecting my sleep, all my activities and my mood. My breasts are swollen and it is extremely uncomfortable and distressing. I too am disturbed by not finding any literature to suggest that this reaction is normal and I am scared it may not improve. I know it was caused by the mammogram as I told the radiographer "This is unbearable, I cannot stand it any more" but she continued to compress my breasts further. The pain was horrible and I cried as soon as I left the building.

  • I can't find a way to edit my post, but meant to say the pain is ten times worse than bad PMS breast pain, not a hundred times worse!

  • You wiill hopefully be relieved to hear that.mine has mainly resolved now. I was going on holiday at 2 1/2 wees after though, so it was quite distressing. I was still sore at that point but had felt some improvement.  I'm now mainly ok, and only feel it when I lie on my front.

Has been horrible, and distressing without information.  I got in touch with tge screening service and tgey took 3 days to get someone to call me. Tgey just suggested seeing a GP, which I couldn't do.

Very glad it's better but still don't understand.  They are going to call me in around a week though, but I'm fairly sure won't be any info. I'll never go back, so it would have been useful to know if something was wrong

  • Also, I took ibuprofen and used ibuprofen gel, not at same time, alternated. Think this helped. Let me know how you're going. Think you should also phone your screening centre to see what they say.
