Rectal cancer

I have recently been diagnosed with rectal cancer following a bowel screening test. I have no symptoms. I have T1/T2 NO. I have chosen to do the organ preservation treatment- radiotherapy and oral chemo. Is they are statics of how successful this is to completely remove the cancer? I am now thinking have I made the right choice.  Should I have gone for surgery in the first instance. I am due to start treatment next week. I have  made the mistake of googling :(

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am sorry that you are going through this doubt about your treatment choices.

We have information on our website about grade one bowel cancer and bowel cancer treatments. Do have a read if helpful, but it is really your own doctor who would be able to advise on what treatment they feel would give you the best outcome. Try and contact your hospital team and try to organise a conversation to go through your options again so that you feel you have made the decision that is right for you.

Take care, and if you want to talk anything through with the nurses on the helpline do call 0808 800 4040. Lines are open mon-fri, 9-5.

    Sarah.
