Bowel cancer - just been diagnosed and found out I will need a stoma fitted. I'm so frightened.

I have been told I have cancer in my rectum. I am so frightened even though my consultant says is curable. I have to have a stoma fitted. I haven’t slept for days. Not sure what to do

  • Hi there and thank you for posting

I am sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis and the treatment you will be needing.

I appreciate this must be a difficult time for you with lots of thoughts and feeling about what is going on but try not to over think things if you can.

Every cancer is different so it is reassuring to hear from your doctor that they say this is a curable cancer. They wouldn't have said that if they didn't think it was the case.

I hope you have some family or friends to support you through this time but also do reach out and ask for professional help if you need it. You can search up cancer support locally by post code on the cancer care map. You may also find there is a cancer support centre or Maggies centre attached to the hospital you are being treated who can also offer you support through this time.

It is important to try and look after yourself and we have a section of information on the website called preparing for treatment and afterwards, prehabilitation that may be useful to look at. Eating well, exercising and getting enough sleep and rest is really important for both your physical, mental and emotional health.

As I say do ask for help by your doctor if you are struggling as they will also be able to help you.

Please get back in touch if you have further questions, you are also welcome to call the nurse helpline on 0808 800 4040 on weekdays 9-5 if you prefer to talk over the phone.

    Wishing you all the best

    Take care

    Naomi
