Shadows on mammograms can mean other non-cancer things, dense breasts, cysts, or scarring, for instance. Other non-cancer breast conditions are listed on this website.

As it is your first mammogram, they must investigate to get a clear baseline of how your breast looks. Biopsies are the easiest and most robust way to rule out anything unclear on the scan.
