Dad's side effects from radiotherapy seem to be getting worse

My dad completed a 4 week treatment of radiotherapy ,  it was 5 days a week for 4 weeks.

it has been 6 weeks since he finished and the after effects seem to be getting worse.

we had to take him back to the hospital yesterday to be checked over ,, they did bloods and an X-ray, they said the effects he is having are normal, mainly tiredness and pain in the area that had treatment.

they said the X-ray showed a “glowing” and my brother understood what they said to be a good thing and the treatment had potentially worked , but had to let everything settle down.

can anyone offer any further advice ?

thsnks in advance

  • Hi Amanda and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your dad's situation and I can appreciate the concern you have.

Radiotherapy continues to work for weeks after the initial treatment has been completed.

Radiotherapy can cause many side effects some specific to where in the body the radiotherapy is aimed.

Tiredness can be a general side effect of radiotherapy which many people suffer from.

You may like to read about tiredness  following radiotherapy on our website. It gives useful tips to try and save energy.

Is your dad currently taking any pain-relieving medication? If not his hospital team could prescribe him something to ease the pain.

If he is already taking pain relief then maybe his hospital team could review the medication. Sometimes it takes a little while to find the right analgesia that works for the individual.

I hope you can get this sorted out soon.  Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best, take care.
