Worried about symptoms

Hi,

im new to this and am not really sure what I need other than some practical advice.
I'm late 40's and had been on the pill for many years therefore hadn't had a period for as long as I remember. In Jan 2021 I started getting cramps, long story short I was diagnosed with 2 uterine fibroids @2cm. In Sept 22 I started bleeding, a mix of pink, red, brown and black with clots along with awful cramps. Went to GP who said it would be the fibroids and that they weren't concerned because at my age they'll start to shrink. Fast forward to Feb 23, I'm still bleeding and my symptoms are very different. I've no idea about weight lost but I'm 3 holes down on my belt, I have terrible daily cramp, pain in my hips, particularly left side and my back and legs. Bleeding post sex now and I'm so swollen and bloated I'm just not sure what to do. I had my 3 yearly smear last week, when I had three days of no bleeding, but the nurse said it coukd take 6 weeks for results. I'm really worried about the increase in my symptoms and feel like k should be doing something but I don't know what.

I've convinced myself I've got cancer, something just isn't right. I don't smell like me, it's not a bad smell but it's not my smell. Any advice or similar situations?

thank you

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about the symptoms you have and the worry they are causing you.

Unfortunately no one here can tell you what is the matter. But I do think you should go back to your GP with your symptoms to say that things have not got better. You may want to ask your GP if you should be referred to see a gynaecologist.

The NHS has some useful information about fibroids that if you have not already seen would be good to read, you can see it on their website here

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • Hi,

I'm in a similar situation, I'm 42 and have a history of endometriosis. I had a miscarriage and a D&C back in August, however my periods have started to become shorter (24 -26) days apart, normally my cycle is 28-30 days. I've now started spotting mid cycle, mostly black blood with a few clots and would last 3 days. I've a constant soreness in my lower abdomen and get very sharp pains shooting up my rectum. I've also been getting really bad calf pain in leg and now spotting after sex and needing to go the toilet alot more aswell as having loose bowel movements.

I am booked in for an MRI but I know in my gut something is not right, even with a normal smear. I just feel like because I'm 42 they are just fobbing me of when I know there is more to it

  • Thank you for the advice. I think I just needed validation before I bothered the GP with an appointment and I'm worried about being fobbed off with "you're at that age" I will make an appointment as I'm now bleeding heavier than ever, changing in every hour.

    Thank you

  • Hi, Thank you for taking the time to respond and share your symptoms and feelings.
Im sorry to hear that you miscarried, it's a difficult experience to go through, one that we probably manage but never forget or get over, certainly for me albeit 15 years ago.
I know what you mean about that gut feeling, I hope that's all it is but it is also reassuring that you have an MRI booked. I hope it goes well and that it shows nothing worrying or alarming.

    Sending warmth and positivity!

  • Thank you, yes apparently I'm infertile and I've had 3 miscarriages in 2 years, it appears since I turned 40 I'm now fertile  It's only by chance I have the MRI booked, I was due to get it last June (didn't have these symptoms then) but because I was pregnant I cancelled it and this morning I got a letter to ask if I still wanted to go ahead with it  I rang them and explained my situation but there is a bag log so they are going to try get me into another clinic to get it done but apart from that I just seem to be getting no where with my gynae   Everything just keeps getting put down to Endometriosis which I have since I was 16 but this is a completely different type of pain.

I really hope you get your answers soon and fingers crossed its good news for you  I feel the waiting game and trying to get answers is the worst

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your symptoms but I do feel reassured to hear that you are going to have a MRI scan, this will give more information about what is the matter.

However if any new symptoms pop up before you get the MRI it might be a good idea to let your GP (or the doctor that referred you for the scan) know about them. This is especially the case about the pain in your calf.  I say this because pain in the back of the knee and calf area, especially bad pain with swelling and redness can sometimes be a sign that there is a clot, this is called a deep vein thrombosis (DVT).  So if you still have pain in your calf you should call NHS 111 and let them know.

I don't want to worry you anymore than is needed and of course I could be wrong about a possible DVT , but please do follow my advice to be on the safe side.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

  • Waiting is the worst! You are right there. Be sure to keep going and hopefully the MRI will give you some answers. As the Nurse advises, get your leg checked out too!

I've got a GP appointment tomorrow so hopefully she will refer me to gynaecology, sooner rather than later.

    Take care.

  • Thanks, I had a phone consultation with my GP yesterday, he said next available appointment to check my leg is next Tuesday so I took it.

Hopefully you will get a referral tomorrow and your not waiting too long on an appointment x

  • Yes, I don't blame you. Good luck and let me know how you get on. I'll be thinking of you!

  • Yes let me know how tomorrow goes, hopefully you will get what you need from your GP
