Just found out I have 5cm nodules help

Hi, I have had under active thyroid for 37 yrs and goilter, this year I have had swelling on my next come up. I have found out after having a ultra scan I have 3 5cm nodules, coupe of small nodules and couple of cysts. I'm now referred to a specialist, I am really worrid incase it is cancer I know I probably have to have biopsy and operation, I have had night mares and it has triggerd my ptsd, what shall I expect on my first appointment with the specialist

  • Not sure if this is going to be any help or not, but if you have to have your thyroid out anyway, it may not really make any great difference to your treatment whether it is cancer or not. Of course, if it is cancer, it will mean that you will have to be monitored for recurrance, but apart from that, the usual treatment for thyroid cancer is the removal of the thyroid so it is quite possible that it being cancer may make little actual difference to your experience (apart from causing worry about the slight possibility of spread or the possibility of recurrence).

Now, if it is cancer and there is spread to the lymph nodes, that would mean a more serious operation but even then, the difference wouldn't necessarily be that great.

Best of luck and I hope it doesn't turn out to be cancer, but just wanted to mention that even if it is, it might not mean any additional treatment.

  • Hi I think Iv just accepted and private messages u

  • Hi thank u for ur message I really appreciate it, I have c t scan Friday and just waiting for a date for the biopsy

  • Hiya storkie the c t scans are nothing to be feared at all I had one when i had breast cancer  ... keep smiling  xxx

  • Don't worry about the CT scan it is to give clear picture and measurements for surgeon so they know what to expect when in surgery. They also check lymph nodes too.

My nodules did the same (mine had started to attach itself to trachea) and caused issues breathing and eating.

Take comfort in the fact doctors are doing all these tests to make sure of things.

Mine had spread to lymph nodes so now awaiting radio iodine treatment (only found out after surgery) My review appointment is on 10th Nov to discuss the surgery which I had on 8th Sept.

Awaiting ENT app for camera to check vocal chords which I dont really relish.

My cancer diagnosis was given to me before my opp but they didn't expect multifocal papillary thyroid cancer which it turned out to be.

Like you don't know how to feel (numb is best to describe) and I just go along with the various appointments I have.

    Chin up and take care

  • I'm so worris and scared like a big baby, and it's the not knowing if it's cancer or not, they said they b able to tell from the biopsy so why don't they do that first lol.

hope ur ok, I had a camera down my throat yesterday I wasn't expecting it but tbh it wasn't that bad they sprayed up my nose to numb my nose and throat, just relax and breath, it only took like 10 sec

  • Thanks at least I know now I should manage that.

Tbh I've found bits and pieces of informatuon from various consultants regarding my outcome as I've bobbed along.

It was during FNA that cancer was first mentioned then by a consultant when I'd been admitted to hospital 2 weeks later after surger because of breathing issues. I think an 8 week wait for a review has been a bit long especially as I need further treatment. So now I go between 2 hospitals (1 where had surgery other where radio iodine treatment is going to be done due to other hospital not having the facility to do it). God knows where ENT will be lol.
