Chemo

Hi everyone, have seen my oncologist today & am starting chemo a week on monday, to say im scared is an understatement.  I have invasive ductal carcinoma stage 3 her positive. But have been assured its treatable & they can give some good treatment for it. Has anyone had chemo & they've used Herceptin amongst other things, just wondering how you found it? Also ive spoken about the cold cap, has anyone had one of these? How was it?

Thanks for all your help & advice, it's much appreciated xxxx

  • Hi Kjenks.

I had Stage 3 endometrial cancer. I had 6 sessions of chemotherapy,i was told i would lose all my hair including eye lashes and brows.. and apparently the cold cap wouldn't have been of any benefit! I think there are some Chemotherapies where they say you 'Could' lose your hair and others you 'Will' lose your hair!! Sorry i know this doesn't really answer your question.! Stay positive and Stay safe xx

  • Hi Kjenks

I was diagnosed with stage 2 grade 3 idc her+ er+ last September. I had three sessions of EC chemotherapy and three sessions of docetaxel, pertumazab and herceptin, followed by a mastectomy in February. (It would have been a lumpectomy but they found a second lump in the same breast). I didn't try the cold cap as I didn't fancy having an icy cold cap on my head during the chemo sessions, instead I invested in a wig and coped with hats and did lose every hair on my body... fortunately growing back nicely now.

The first three sessions went well apart from severe nausea, which I absolutely hate, but kept in top of the anti nausea tablets which helped me cope.  Ifounf I tolerated the docetaxel better but did use cold gloves and socks to avoid losing my nails ..and it did work albeit they are much weaker.

The best advice I could give anyone is listen to your body and rest when you can and go out for fresh air when you feel up to it.  Chemo is not a walk in the park but is doable. Looking back now I feel it went very quickly and am now well on the way to recovery.

I am still having herceptin injections every three weeks and they are going really well and have also been prescribed letrozole tablets which I take daily fir the next ten years. I was very nervous about starting these after reading about people who suffered with side effects but in my case they're not so bad. Takes me a while to get moving if I've sat still but once up and about it's ok.

Everyone reacts differently to any medication.

Take care of yourself and I wish you well for the next few months. If you want to ask any more questions please feel free.

  • Hi Sianj

Thanks for replying, i must admit I'm prepared to lose hair, although the thought does stress me out, but feel its a small price to pay for getting rid of this cancer, I'll try the cold cap & see how i get on. Hard to stay positive in these times . Hopefully everything is going well for you now?

    Take care

  • Hi Lulu

    Thanks for replying

Glad things are looking more positive for you now.

Ive purchased a wig & some caps to be prepared, i must admit it doesnt sound very comfortable but feel I've nothing to lose by giving it a go.

I keep telling myself that lots of people go through this everyday, i know it's not going to be easy, it helps to speak with people that have been through it & can advise you, for which im very thankful.

    Take care

  • Hi there, hope you dont mind me jumping in here.  Read your post about your diagnosis and just wonder what your treatment plan is, to see if it is similar to mine.  I agree with you, it is scary but its do-able and we can do this. Think of each day as one step closer to finishing treatment.  Take care.

  • Hi Sianj, I just posted a message on this thread but meant to send it to yourself.  !  Sorry!  I noticed you were diagnosed with endometrial cancer , same as me, and I just wondered what your treatment plan is going to be?  Thanks so much.

  • So sorry Kjenks, I meant to post that to Sianj.  X

  • No problem at all, hope eveything goes well for you xx

  • Hi there, thank you.  I had a bad reaction to my chemo and it was stopped , but mine was a particularly harsh one and not for breast cancer.  Lost my hair after just one, but I believe some breast cancer chemos are fine, someone i know from school has finished her chemos and although she lost her hair, she felt ok apart from feeling sick but not being sick and she has continued to work all the way through so fingers crossed for you too.

  • Hiya catswhiskas

Sounds as though you really went through it, hopefully you are ok now.? I think im preparing to lose it anything else is a blessing

That sounds so encouraging but i know we re all different & will react in different ways.

Hope you & your friend are both well

    Take care
