nipple pain

My husband & I have been trying for a baby, on the due date of my last period i began to get pain in my right nipple. I thought i was pregnant but i'm not so  I assumed the pain was hormonal. 2 weeks after my period i still have pain, my breast dont look any different so I never really thought about cancer until I saw that underarm pain could be a symptom, I have pain in my right underarm. I have decided to go to my gp but i'm worried that they'll just dismiss it. any advice would be apreciated

Re: nipple pain

Hello tnymac,

Breast (and nipple) pain is quite often hormonal and nothing to worry about, but seeing your GP is the right thing to do to be on the safe side. Your GP can assess you and I expect they will want to do a breast examination to look for a lump or area of thickening.

If they do find something out of the ordinary they may want to refer you to the breast clinic for more tests. This can be an urgent (2 week) referral or may take a bit longer. But the GP may not think this is needed.

You didn’t mention how old you are. Most breast cancers are diagnosed in women aged 50 and above.

Breast pain with no other symptoms isn’t a common way for breast cancer to show itself. So there is a good chance there is nothing serious the matter, but hopefully your GP will be able to put your mind more at rest.

I hope this is of some use.

Best wishes,
